About the Country

A country of approximately 18,792 square miles, the Dominican Republic is located on the island of Hispaniola in the Caribbean Sea and occupies the eastern two-thirds of the island. Bordered by Haiti to the west, the land is covered by approximately 80% of massive mountain ranges. The climate is semi-tropical which is tempered by the prevailing easterly winds. The main resources of the country are agricultural due to the fertile soil of the land. The capital of Dominican Republic

Over 9 million people inhabit the Dominican Republic, with the majority residing in urban areas. A full third of the population is under the age of 15, and nearly two-thirds are below the age of 30. The main ethnic group is Hispanic (83%) followed by Haitians (16%). The official language is Spanish, although English is also spoken, as well as a French dialect among the Haitian frontier.

The great majority of the population is Roman Catholic with a small Protestant community, and about 1% of the inhabitants are Spiritists. Both the Catholic and Protestant faiths are growing, though Protestants are growing faster. Even with so many people professing Christianity, half the population is still involved in cultic practices, mainly voodooism.

Only 10% attend church regularly. The prospect of impacting this country with the Gospel is immense. With a majority of the population under the age of 30, now is the opportune time to reach these young people with the power of God’s Word, so that the cultic traditions of old may be replaced by the truth of God’s Word.
